Pupils at the Baptist Vocational Institute |
Ghana's
Trokosi girls are abused, groaning, and crying for mercy. Literally!
In
this practice, women and girls are subjected to harmful traditional practices
which degrade them and are an infringement of their fundamental human rights.
Even
children as young as age five, almost mostly girls, are not spared--parents or
families offer these girls to village priests as sexual and/or domestic
"wives to the gods" to a life of servitude, physical and sexual abuse
and deprivation, simply to atone for a crime committed by a family
member-this constitutes child marriage as these girls are married off before they
turn 18 years.
Girls
at the Baptist Vocational Institute are no exception-most of them were
previously married off to pay for the sins of others.
Gospel dance group, Survivors4Christ, has selected the Baptist
Vocational Institute, whose pupils mostly female, have previously experienced
Trokosi and have been rescued, as its focus group for this year's Gospel Dance Merit (GDM) event, with the aim to help address
some of the institute's education logistics challenges.
"Our
first visit to the institute revealed heart wrenching and traumatic stories
experienced by these girls", President of Survivors4Christ, Ruby Akyaa Asuming, told
cmcghana.blogspot.com in an interview via what's app.
"Twenty-year
old females, forced into marriage, with two or more children have been enrolled
by the institute to help provide emotional, psychological, spiritual and
vocational support to these girls", she added.
A
gospel dance event which comes off Friday July 1, 2016, will be held with
the principal aim to raise funds to support the ex-Trokosi girls at the institute.
Be
part of this Holy Spirit, fun-packed and memorable life changing
experience--join Survivors4Christ in this year's Gospel Dance Merit (GDM) event to help
shape and develop a life.
Your
1.00 Ghana cedi and more can cause a change-be that person!
This
event is powered by Survivors4Christ.
