Dear Ghana Media - Let's Stand and Fight for our Values

By Crabbe Nathaniel

"But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away", Matthew 13:25.

For some if not most politicians and their party faithful - the end game to winning means the other party has to be destroyed.

Which is why Ghana's media have a towering amount of work to do: investigating and double-checking everything, "speaking truth to" and holding power accountable at these crucial and sensitive electioneering period.

The media can either contribute to a more useful system and process or to deepening the political dysfunction - which is - perhaps long before I noticed - the toxic partisan affairs most of us have become accustomed to.

Also Read: http://cmcghana.blogspot.com/2016/10/with-no-apology-charlotte-osei-has-got.html?m=1

Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Adams Mahama, who died in the hospital following an acid attack on him and the NPP Member of Parliament for Abuakwa North in the Eastern Region, Joseph Boakye Danquah-Adu, who was also stabbed to death at his residence - among other unacceptable acts in today's civilized world of politics are evident of the poisonous partisan nature of Ghana's 'politenemics' [politics + enemies].

While this is not peculiar to this country - I cannot pretend that I'm well acquainted with the political happenings of other nations: what I have read and heard isn't enough to pass as an expert to warrant any critique of this or any sort.

Notwithstanding - no Ghanaian or persons of good will should be heckled from penning their observations and concerns about a subject matter because they are not an authority on the issue: we must all be willing to allow the wheels of checks and balances to plough in on our various spaces while we make history one more time.

This is another reason media practitioners especially the powerful segments of the media must be told they cannot allow themselves to be infected by the politics of acrimony: Journalism cannot be weaponize in favor or against an individual, group, groups or political parties.

We cannot allow ourselves to be called on to duty and used as enablers by individuals and so-called party big wigs whose maneuverings and shenanigans seek to plunge our country into avoidable chaos.

And that is why I am scandalized by the #Here and #Say reporting being fed to the masses: Monday December 5, 2016, sham evidence of thumb-printed ballot papers could have been easily fact-checked with the authorized institutions i.e. Electoral Commission [EC) and/or Police before publishing.

Purported bags of thumb-printed ballot papers

It would therefore be reasonable for one to ask - couldn't the people that matter at the so-called big media houses fact-checked the bizarre evidence of thumb-printed ballot papers among other earlier alleged electoral crimes before disseminating?

I would reiterate the words of the Ashanti regional police command, COP Kofi Boakye, who said the purported bags of thumb-printed ballot papers found in a hotel in Kumasi are fake and described the “noise as irresponsible, unnecessary and uncalled for.”

COP Kofi Boakye

How difficult is it to determine the stamp and serial numbers on authentic and authorized EC ballot papers? I can think far on this; deadly mischief aimed at causing public distrust and disaffection for the Electoral Commission has been championed for far too long.

But I would be diction-careful in this regard. Because our job as media practitioners in this Herculean times is beyond just here and say reporting: we must rise above this kind of reporting to fact checking before sharing.

The simple reason: readers do not always come back for updates as they should.

Why they don't: they sometimes have other pressing needs demanding their attention - not just what has become media rants published as news.

I - a non-award-winning journalist is forced to ink my fears of the possibility of our media plunging us into perils that would be arduous to return: the deep trenches of civil unrest fueled by its repeated but avoidable failure to abide by the simple ethic of fact-checking stories. Double! Before publishing.

Because the country cannot afford to have people embark on peaceful protests much worse violent ones sparked by reinforce falsehoods or unverified media reports at the ongoing sensitive electioneering process - more so - when some political party foot-soldiers are poised to cause mayhem at the least chance catalyzed by falsehoods.

But relax; I am well aware of what accusing the media of inciting, sympathizing, and associating with any group or political party means: we'll be accused of being a rented-press - which politicians and their party loyalists know too well - how to tag journalists - and they have - in order to discredit us and rob the fourth estate off of the trust the public reposes in us, our significant role in shaping the course of politics while diminishing the important role of the media as a force in governance.

Sadly - this is working!!

I dare you to read the comments section of write ups by the so-called big media houses and you'll be alarmed at the eroding public trust in the media: some of which is self-inflicted though.

And this is a matter above grave concern. I quake. Sometimes worse. Because this is not just what I went to the Ghana Institute of Journalism for - to fight for our values - as a Ghanaian I cannot sit and watch.

Trust is our sole bargaining chip. Once broken we can as well pack our pens, reporter's notes, coats and call it a quit.

Ghana requires a free and safe press at all times - and in a time such as this - to help the citizenry make informed decisions regarding who they vote for.

Not a #Hear and #Say media - worse yellow journalism. We shouldn't stand for being tagged biased or rented or lying or failing to double-check.

Although in the last month or more - we've engaged in somewhat - yellow journalism - and have caused more harm because we choose what would sell our brands and click bait headlines against patriotism and professionalism: I shrink in disbelief at the thought and sight of this.

Do you?

I would urge that we return to unbiased fact-based reporting. And work towards truthful reporting: media practitioners cannot afford to further erode the public good reposed in us.

And to you non-media persons - there is always two sides to a story - sometimes more. Don't just believe or conclude after hearing the selective narratives put out there by the so-called media "cabal".

The solution: always research the stories you read or hear especially from your known party-loyal media houses before you conclude. And be open to more information from other sources.

Let us fight for our values!!!

Trump's Election Win Is Not God's Voice

You cannot use 1 Corinthians 1-27 "But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong" to justify Trump's victory.

US President-elect Donald Trump.

By now you have moved on - may be not!

If you have - perhaps you deserve a spa treat at the last floor of a Trump tower or a world tour in his private jet for being among the many people with gladiator-shock-absorbers.

Reality check: millions are still alarmed and in fear by the foul rhetoric of US President-elect Donald Trump during and after the presidential election campaigns - many or none of which he has still not disavowed and appears determined to pursue.

You should be terrified too!

Or I hope the many of you twerking to a Trump victory isn't only about the Democratic Party's [Hillary Clinton] pro-women's right to abortion or pro-gay rights.

Shocker!

"It's law. It was settled in the Supreme Court...they've been settled, and I'm fine with that", U.S. President-elect Donald J. Trump is quoted by The Hill to have said on the issue of gay marriage.

While this reported pronouncement may have put to rest some fears - lawful protests across the U.S. is evident that thousands continue to remain jittery of a Trump presidency: his bed-reddening win left the world markets tumbling - the Internet also reacted in shock and in disbelieve.

For millions Trump's ascension to the United States' presidency is an overwhelming victory for bigots, racists, misogynists, chauvinists and white supremacists. His vitriolic verbal attacks especially of Muslims and Mexicans - women and blacks is beyond heart sickening. It is anti-Christ!

It therefore strikes a jolt of paralysis to read and listen to a Calvary of so-called Christian voices literally ascribe President-elect Donald Trump as "savior" of the "Free World" who would cleanse the world of its sins: I cringe and "curl up". Not with a good book.

With a pen and paper to ask you to SHUT UP. Which is overly being mild and extremely kind: your ignorance is toxic, dire, and deadly and deserves far more tongue-lashing and ink-bashing. It makes it very difficult to react to your ill-informed logic with any sort of respect - after your poor attempt to equate or justify Trump's win with biblical quotations including 1 Corinthians 1-27 "But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong".

Don't be silly; Trump is neither weak nor foolish: he is a U.S. billionaire business mogul with a great deal of assets which makes him one of the most strong and influential people on the world stage with ties to prominent world leaders - possibly those of Russia.

Just so you know - the nuclear-like challenges threatening world peace, economic stability and human existence or lives including poverty and hunger, fair trade, narcotics, injustice, terrorism, racism, unequal rights for all persons, global warming, ongoing wars and the looming threat of a Third World War are far dire than your pursuit to push your beliefs and values down people's throats.

May be you should be more concern about the drop-dead reality that we all could be wiped out in minutes without prior notice. And not about who's FUCKING who or what some women want to do with a pregnancy.

Your misplaced confidence of arrogating to yourselves some form of authority to act as God's spokespersons is upsetting: Because I'm still trying to find out where in the Bible white supremacy is promoted.

Because more than divisive rhetoric [us versus them] and resentment [darkness] appears to have won. While you reserve the right to gyrate - you are cannot posit that most of Trump's vile rhetoric on Mexicans and Muslims personifies the Holy Bible.

I can relate to sexism and slavery though.

Your reason for hailing Trump's win is well within your rights and perhaps understandable: that the Democratic Party [Hillary Clinton] supports anti-biblical policies including women's rights to abortion and gay rights - not with standing - does not make Trump a quarter of half an inch close to being the-would-be savior" of the U.S. or God-elect.

Don't confuse political correctness with true character or beliefs: mentioning Jesus Christ/Allah or God's name on campaign platforms does not qualify one as God's own elect to be leader.

Else leaders in my native country, Ghana, are God-sent-sons to rule.

Theocracy is extinct: people choose their leaders in the 21st century. You do not know what God wants for the American people - God may work with who ever the U.S. electoral collage chooses.

So yeah - SHUT UP!

And allow people to heal from the offensive and divisive rhetoric from both sides during presidential electioneering campaigns.

Which I doubt would be anytime soon.

And to any one super-anxious about the future due to an eminent Trump presidency - let me reecho parts of what President Obama said he briefly told his daughters Malia, 18, and Sasha, 15, about Trump's victory during an extensive profile by the New Yorker, which gives an inside look at Obama before and after the election: "...people are complicated. Societies and cultures are really complicated... This is not mathematics; this is biology and chemistry," Obama told the New Yorker's David Remnick.

"These are living organisms and it's messy. And your job as a decent human being is to constantly affirm and lift up and fight for treating people with kindness and respect and understandings...at any given moment there's going to be flare-ups of bigotry that you may have to confront, or may be inside you and you have to vanquish. And it doesn't stop... You don't get into a fetal position about it. You say, 'Ok, where are the places where I can push to keep it moving forward'", Obama said.

President Mahama: “Ahwene pa nkasa”

Someone please “invite [President Mahama] to stop whining” or quit pulling the Trump-card. May be both.

Ghana's President Mahama

And also remind him “Ahwene pa nkasa” [good beads do not talk/market themselves]: that the “good performance” of his government would certainly get noticed by the good people of Ghana if they deserve to be acknowledged.

African beads

He has on most campaign platforms criticized opposition parties particularly the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for belittling his government’s achievements.

And the media has not been spared from what is often his propaganda denunciations on campaign platforms.

President John Mahama on Tuesday October 18 suggested the media has been bias towards his government citing unnamed “certain group [that] has taken control of the media” who either stretch the truth or repel information of the better Ghana agenda from reaching the masses.

“We have taken access to water from 58 percent in 2008 to 78 percent today. Small town water systems, boreholes all across this country have been constructed. We have eradicated guinea worm”, he said in an exclusive interview with Ovation International Flagstaff Magazine at the House in Accra.

And says his government's achievements are not reaching Ghanaians because some persons in the media are sieving them out insisting if the media would be balance and objective in their reportage it would be the reverse.

"His [Akufo-Addo] thinking of Kasoa Interchange is that it is just a bridge. Kasoa Interchange is made up of three bridges. There is a main interchange and then two bridges to enable the people of East Kasoa and West Kasoa cross to the other halves of the city”, myjoyonline.com reported the president as saying.

For a sitting president to cry foul – “I can’t think far”: it is beyond tasteless.

If President John Mahama sees himself at the losing end after the December 7 General Elections the media would be the last to blame. Perhaps never.

Because the country’s media have among other things failed to provide editorial opinions on the presidential candidates and their so-called achievements to propel its agenda setting role: the media has the responsibility to make a clear case base on facts as to which presidential candidate is best to be the country's commander-in-chief.

For now - the president has ample time to get his achievements and campaign messages to the people. May be.

He should spare our ears the failures of his cocky surrogates and communicators.

Indonesian leader vows to 'wipe out paedophilia' by castrating and executing sex offenders

Indonesian President Joko Widodo has defended the introduction of castration and the death penalty for paedophiles.

His parliament last week voted to introduce the tough new measures and the leader has spoken of the country's 'no compromise' approach to sex crimes.

'Our constitution respects human rights, but when it comes to sexual crimes there is no compromise.
'In my opinion, chemical castration, if we enforce it consistently, will reduce sex crimes and wipe them out over time,' he said.

The emergency decree was introduced following an outcry in the aftermath of the fatal gang-rape of a schoolgirl.

Widodo defended introducing chemical castration, a decision that has sparked anger from human rights activists and the Indonesian Doctors Association, which has said its members will not perform the treatment.

He told the BBC the government 'will hand out the maximum penalty' for sex crimes.

Twelve of the men accused of raping and murdering a 14-year-old schoolgirl in Bengkulu Province, Indonesia in April were seen hiding their faces as they emerged from a police cell guided by a plain clothed officer.

Yuyun (above right in a family photograph released by her mother) was walking home from school when she was killed

Indonesia is among a small group of places worldwide which use the measure, including Poland and some states in the USA.

In 2011 South Korea became the first Asian country to legalise the treatment.

Chemical castration involves using drugs to reduce libido and sex drive.

Widodo was spurred into action after the murder and gang-rape in April of a 14-year-old girl Yuyun.
She was set upon by a gang of drunken men and boys as she walked home from school on the western island of Sumatra.

The leader of the gang was sentenced to death last month after being found guilty of premeditated murder, a crime already punishable by death before the new laws were introduced.

Other members of the gang have been jailed.
